Cell membranes contain a variety of transport proteins, each of which is responsible for transferring for a particular type of solute across the membrane. For example, transfer of nutrients, metabolites and ions across the plasmamembrane and internal cell membranes is carried out by membrane transport proteins.
So these proteins play important role in supplying nutrients to the cell and maintaining ion gradients and electrochemical potential for ATP synthesis.
